Okay pull up the carpet or vinyl, take a probe of sorts (such as a screwdriver or 16d nail) and prod into the floor. follow water stains and if needed go to the adjoining room to check there. This is where it gets tricky. If it goes under the wall, the wall will be no more because usually it is in the wall too. pull off paneling or drywall and look at the studs and insulation. IF AT ANY POINT YOU SEE BLACK ON ANYTHING, STOP AND GET A RESPIRATOR MASK. This is mold and is very dangerous to inhale. Use either a bleach concentrate or a mold remedy and leave wall open for a few days. Tearing up the floor is cumbersome and tedious although not really difficult. Tear it down to joist, take out all nails and/ or staples, sand or plane and start laying new floor. May as well put down new insulation while you are at it. then fill crack in between plywood joists with Fix-All from Home Depot and it is ready to recover I just finished doing that.
